After 10 months of construction, GSE has delivered the new clay roof tile manufacturing plant to Lafarge Roofing.

The new plant, located in Limoux, in Aude county, France, significantly increases Lafarge production capacity, reinforcing its regional presence in southwest France, greater southern France and the Rhone Valley. The project was built on 15 hectares of land, with 27,700 m² of built area, and outdoor storage of 85,000m².

Plant construction involved several aspects of GSE proficiency, calling upon building-process interface management expertise which required civil engineering input for the specific process equipment used by Lafarge (kilns, dryers, shaping, crushing, raw material storage…).

Throughout the construction project, GSE completed units which it provided Lafarge for the installation of process machinery. The GSE global approach enabled Lafarge Roofing to control operating time constraints, and commissioning tests for the plant were started within days of building provision.

Project architect: Atelier Crossman in Limoux (11).

Technical Description
  • Special foundations: compacted column foundations.
  • Building subgrade made with cut and fill material, hydraulic binder soil treatment.
  • Complex slabs and civil engineering for process equipment and operations (rafts, heavy foundations, silos, pits, ducting…).
  • Metal frame building, double skin cladding, steel roof panels.
  • Building technical trades and process electricity supply (medium voltage/low voltage transformer station), gas, water and compressed air.
  • All secondary trades.
  • Coated truck roads and outdoor storage areas.
  • Surface water treated through hydrocarbon traps and storm water tank with leakage rate.

Gross surface areas
Production plant and crushing zone / clay storage = 25,100 m²
Offices and social premises = 1,250 m²
Technical rooms and workshop = 200 m²
Awnings = 600 m²
Fleet manager building = 150 m²
Sales building = 400 m²
Total = 27,700 m²

Lafarge Roofing has assigned GSE with a new production plant

This new construction project is located in the Ardennes, in Signy l’Abbaye, and concerns the construction of a 40,000-m² clay tile production plant.

In compliance with its purchasing policy, GSE will seek local suppliers for this operation.

GSE constructions for the Lafarge Group

These recent examples are far from the first buildings built by GSE for Lafarge, for the two companies have worked together for over 15 years.
GSE has already delivered over 110,000 m² of buildings to Lafarge, including:

  • For Lafarge Gypsum, seven production plants for powder and wallboard
    in France. The first in 1989 in Saint-Loubès (33), in Germany (Lubbenau and Lippendorf), in Poland (Gacki) and in China (Shanghai).
  • In 2002, GSE built two buildings for the Lafarge Group International Technological Center, specialized in leading-edge research on building materials: 4,900 m² of laboratories and 800 m 2 of offices. The site has been designed to hold many different Lafarge Group companies.
